Moderate exercise cuts stroke risk for women

It has long been known that exercise can cut the risk of a stroke, but research has suggested that moderate exercise can have the same benefits as more vigorous exercise.

Research presented at the International Stroke Conference shows a reduced risk of 20 percent for women, and the exercise will also offset the raised risk experienced by those who take hormonal treatments.  Women can reduce their risk of a stroke by going for a brisk walk, reaping the same benefits as running.

It is estimated that almost 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke each year.  Around 130,000 of these people die as a result of the condition, and the health service in the U.S. spends around $38.6 billion each year on strokes and similar conditions.  For this study, data was analyzed from more than 130,000 women.  The study found that those who regularly took part in moderate activity for three years before participating in the study had a 20 percent lower risk of having a stroke when compared to those who were not active.

Opting for more strenuous exercise did not reduce the risk of stroke any further. Brisk walking seemed to be the ideal exercise for most women.  For women who are post-menopausal, there is a 30 percent increased risk of stroke, but the risk decreases when the hormone therapy stops.  This means it is not necessary for women to pay out for expensive gym memberships; opting for simple exercise like walking is sufficient.
